April, 2015 Vol-4

April is here! So is Easter, Earth day and the Tax Deadline!

MESSING WITH OUR MERIDIANS
Last month we talked about time and the body clock. Time zones go east and west around the earth, what about going north and south? Does that affect us? Until the last hundred years we didn’t have the equipment to notice if there was a change. Now that we have airplanes going across the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn and the Equator we are now seeing that there is an impact. I especially notice this in skiers, snow boarders and surfer dudes who are competing in countries north and south of LA but in similar time zones. Why would this happen? The 12 meridians that travel head to toe in the body are affected by east-west travel.

There is another set of meridians that we use in emotional release work that spiral around the body in a circle with emphasis at areas called Chakras. There is very specific spinal nerve levels that these “round” meridians influence and vice versa. It is possible that it is these neuro-physiological spiral meridians that are influenced when we travel quickly north and south. As the research is published maybe we will know more.

MINUTIA ON MY MIND
Those who know me, know that I have a mind for minutia, for whatever reason I remember stuff. The amount and kind of stuff amazes even me. Someone gave me a card that said we waited in line for 5 years of our lives. Six months waiting at red lights. Bet that is longer in SoCal. My home town in Montana is now a three light town. There were a lot of other stats on the card. I saved it because of the minutia.

The pressure of our hearts pushing blood for a lifetime would launch five Saturn rockets into space. 23% of women between ages 40 and 50 are on antidepressants. Get this, 11% of Americans over age 12 are on antidepressants! What is wrong with this nation! I have a theory, see below.

Sharks can feel 1/5 billionth (yup, with a B) of a volt produced off metal which is why divers are wearing more ceramics and plastics versus metal equipment. The kill ratio for humans and sharks is 8 to 100,000,000 a year! There is no god reason to kill a shark. Many sharks will produce 35,000 teeth in a life time. Teeth are the only fossil record we have for sharks. The Aquarium of the Pacific is the only institution to birth Zebra Sharks from artificial insemination.

A half teaspoon of baking soda in water when hard boiling eggs will make the eggs easier to peel. I love rubber bands for making it easier to exercise hands, open jars and keep clothes on slippery hangers. Thanks Helen, for that last bit of minutia!

UC Davis recycles 6.4-12.8 TONS of laboratory gloves a year which are used to make benches, car bumpers and other plastic objects. Dan Smith of Oregon was the first to seriously collect and recycle plastics into what we wear and walk on as carpet. The Great Pacific plastic raft is 300 square miles and 300 ft. deep. Someone, please find a way to recycle that! Dan?

21.6% of the 3+million calls to the Poison Control Center are about three kinds of prescription drugs. Calls on cosmetics were 7.6%. It is a good idea to change the batteries in smoke alarms at Day Light Saving Time changes. That was March 8th. See what I mean? Minutia.

DUELING DEFINITIONS
Why would so many Americans be on antidepressants? Maybe the problem is with definitions. In oriental health care, depression is under the Gall Bladder Meridian along with resentment, indecisiveness, uncertainty, keeping one’s emotional act together. In western medicine depression is defined as a chemical malfunction often with the endocrine system or brain chemistry.

When given the definition of depression in oriental philosophy versus the western medical definition, most people will say that is not their problem. However if asked if they have suffered losses, have grief, are sad then they say that describes them. Losses, grief, sadness, yearning for life to be different, feelings of being emotionally hurt and not being happy is on the Lung Meridian in oriental healing. It is not depression. It is not a chemical imbalance. It is loss. Maybe that is why antidepressants don’t work for most people.

HUYA! HUYA!
So what do we do if we have loss, feel unhappy about life? I HUYA! That stands for Hold Up Your Arm as in Emotional Release Techniques. I find someone to help me sort out what the issues are that are making me unhappy. I go to healing seminars, grief seminars, I talk to my friends, I mourn the losses. I gave myself one to three years to mourn the loss of my parents and one of my best friends. In other words, I don’t push the issue, feelings behind me and not look at it. I spend the time to really look and sort it out. Oddly enough most of my unhappiness comes from having a judgment or expectation about how life, people should be. If I let go of the judgment or expectation the emotional stress goes with it. No wonder the thou-shalt-not-judge phrase is in every spiritual writing!

Some will say I never had real depression. I have. There have been two occasions when I had depression caused by a chemical imbalance. The first time I didn’t know about natural healing methods and took the RX. The second time I knew about using nutritional support. That worked a lot better for me. Thank the scientist that we have medication for those who really need them. So from the minutia of waiting in line for five years (What of loss of my precious time!) we got to the difference between depression (chemical) and loss, grief, hurt and unhappy.  Either problem can be handled by balancing the body. That is what I do for myself and you.

We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: The last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances. Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose. Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom. It is not freedom from conditions, but it is freedom to take a stand toward the conditions. What is to give light must endure burning.”
